Kawana Island Dog Laws

Kawana Island is a great place to own a dog, and walking your pet is an ideal way to not only enjoy the array of walking paths provided to locals throughout and around the island, but a good way for interacting with locals, both for the pets and ourselves.

Are Dogs allowed to be walked off-leash?

The pathways are also shared with cyclists, runners and other walkers, and ensuring your dog is on a leash at all times in any public areas on Kawana Island is not only courteous, but could avoid you paying a hefty on the spot fine.

Any public areas (eg, outside of primate yards, is deemed public land, and all pets should be kept on a leash in these areas under council law.
There are signs located in many public areas of Kawana Island to ensure residents are aware of this.

The current fine for dog owners is believed to be $242 if caught without their pet restrained in a public area.

Do I need to clean up after my dog when walking them?

This seems like a no-brainer, however it is not uncommon to see dog mess on many of the common walking paths around Kawana Island, as well as the grass areas around the pathways.

It is the responsibility of all pet owners to ensure they clean up after their animals while waling them, and this includes both the paths and the grass areas.
If caught or reported, your pet could cost you a $252 on the spot fine for their public toilet antics.

That’s one pricey poop.

Let’s work together to keep Kawana Island clean. If you see someone’s pet pooping or walking without a lead, kindly remind their owners to do the right thing.

Where can my pet get a good Doggicino around here?

Yes, a Doggicino is a real thing, and your dog will love you for it. After all, why should us humans get to enjoy a good coffee while our furry friends miss out?

Our local Kawana Island cafe, Mykies by the Bay, serves up a delicious doggicino that your pet will thank you for, (especially the secret carob treats hidden in the bottom).
And you might even find some delicious doggy treats available at the counter as well!
Mykies is a dog-friendly cafe, making it very popular for local pet owners, so if you haven’t taken your favourite furry child out to a cafe for a while, maybe it’s time you visited Mykies.
